The House met at 10 a.m. with the Deputy Speaker in the Chair. The day was devoted for the transaction of Government Business.
Starred questions Nos.356, 357, 358, 359, 360, 361 and 362 with supplementaries thereto were replied. Starred question No.363 was not asked. Unstarred questions Nos.67 to 77 to which written replies were given, were laid on the table.
Under Rule 49 (a) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, Dr. Mukul Sangma raised a Zero Hour Notice with regard to the setting up of a NEHU Campus in Garo Hills to provide equal opportunities in the principle of the right to equality as laid down in the Constitution of India for the people of Garo Hills and the people of Meghalaya at large. He desired to know of the steps which the Government had taken with the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India in this regard.
Clarifying the position, Shri T.C. Lyngdoh, Minister of State Education informed the hon. Member from Ampati that the State Government is very much alive on this issue and that it has been considered view of the State Government that the establishment of a NEHU Campus in Garo Hills will benefit the students of Garo Hills in particular and of Meghalaya in general especially in studies of subjects which are not available in the Shillong campus like Commerce and Geology etc. He further stated that the Chief Minster had already taken up the matter personality with the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development requesting the Government of India for a sympathetic consideration of this request at a very early date and assured the House that a positive response in this direction was received from the Union Minister, Human Resources Development which stated that the matter will be looked into by his Ministry.
