Government Resolution : Setting up a Central University for the North Eastern Region of India.

       The resolution was moved in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly by Shri. Sandford K. Marak (Minister, Education) requesting the Central Government to set up the proposed Central University for the North-Eastern Region of India, and also requesting Parliament to pass the requisite Legislation on the above subject. The purpose of setting up a Central University was mainly to provide higher education to the students of the North-Eastern Region of India.

        Taking part in the discussion on the resolution initiated by the Education Minister are Capt. W.A. Sangma (Chief Minister), Shri. S.D.D. Nichols Roy (Minister, Agriculture), Shri. S.J. Duncan, M.L.A. Shri. P.R Kyndiah, M.L.A., and Shri. J.D. Pohrmen, M.L.A. All the above members supported the motion on the resolution.

         The text of the Resolution was as follows -

        "That, whereas it is expedient that a Central University for the North-Eastern Region of India should be established by the Union Government :

        And whereas it is necessary for the Parliament to pass necessary legislation for establishing the aforesaid Central University:

       And whereas the subject "Education including Universities" falls within entry 10 of part 'A' of the Second Schedule to the Assam Re-organisation (Meghalaya) Act, 1969 :

        And whereas under Article 252 (1) of the Constitution of India, it is a necessary to pass a resolution desiring that the Parliament should legislate on the above subject.

        Now, therefore, this Assembly is of opinion that in the interest of the proposed Central University to be set up by the Union Government, Parliament may pass the requisite legislation."

Resolution due to the death of President Gamal Abdul Nasser of the U.A.R.

        The Resolution was moved in the House by Shri. W.A. Sangma (Chief Minister) during Obituary Reference.

        The text of the Resolution was as follows -

        "The House expresses deep sorrow at the death of President Gamal Abdul Nasser of the U.A.R. His death is untimely and a great loss to his country and the world. In his life he strove very hard for the welfare of his people and in the international sphere always aligned himself with the cause of the Nations struggling for political and economic independence. With this death, the people of the U.A.R. have lost their greatest patriot".

        The Resolution will passed after it was approved by the House.

Resolution for converting the autonomous state of Meghalaya into a full fledged separate State.

         The Resolution was moved in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly by Capt. W.A. Sangma (Chief Minister). The Hon. Members taking part in the discussion on the resolution are Shri. Justman Swer, Shri. Nurul Islam, Shri. D.D. Pugh, Shri. Nimosh Sangma, Shri. S.P. Swer, Shri. Witherson Momin, Dr. S.C. Deb, Shri. H.C. Bhuyan, Shri. Singjan Sangma, Shri. J.D. Pohrmen, Shri. Rokendro Dkhar, Shri. P.R. Kyndiah, Shri. Man Bahadur Newar, Shri. B.B. Lyngdoh, Shri. S.D.D. Nichols Roy. All the above Members supported the resolution.

        The text of the Resolution was as follows :

        "Having regard to the difficulties which have already risen to the surface and which are bound to confront the Government in an increasing manner in the implementation of the complicated scheme embodied in the Assam Re-organisation (Meghalaya) Act, 1969:

        This House resolves that the Government of India be moved to take immediate steps to bring Meghalaya on at part with the other sister states of the Union by converting this autonomous state into a full fledged separate state."

        The Motion was adopted and the resolution was passed.
